[Freya: The goddess who's obsession was her downfall and the redpill you probably weren't paying attention to]
Alright so first off, this will likely be my Last analysis of danmachi because it would get repetitive and I will probably do it again when mushoku tensei returns.
So getting that off my chest, I am going to spend another 2 weeks binging again because aside from danmachi being that good, after you see it the first time you get a different view of how things are, Hermes being a slippery fuck, the various gods and goddesses toying around and Freyas obsession over Bell.
First off, I'll discuss the Obsession and after, the redpilling that after I gave it a second thought at work, it is a little redpilling, and obviously another spoiler bit so you better have watched or not my problem.
So pretty much Freyas introduced in the first few episodes as the goddess of "love" (or one of them). With episode 2 you hear her discussion how she has her eyes on a particular adventurer, And with the camera panning around to inevitably bell you are given the notion that she is watching him, seeing his progression. She unleashes the gorilla beast and obviously used it as a toy to test him his merit and skills to be able to protect his goddess.
This early on she probably just had an idea but I'd say it wasn't until bells early rank up, hearing about him defeating the minotaur and gained the nickname of "little rookie" where her curiosity and light infatuation likely turned to obsession, and that slowly sparked the demise of her familia.
With his following rank up and heading into the red-light district and catching the attention of the Ishtar familia, (you know how that went) Freya interrupted and sent Ishtar who would also be obsessed with bell back to heaven. Obviously because someone else was try to take what she felt was hers.
Skipping ahead to after season 4 would be when she would finally have enough. Obviously after another few rank ups and obviously hearing about his exploits in the expedition and likely that he helped with destroying a juggernaut, (Yeah, just watch season 4 part 2 again) she likely turned up the dials and was pushing yandere territory without the killing impulse.
With season 5 it was great with showing how even a goddess can lose her mind trying to take what she wants. We usually saw her manipulating matters from the shadow but nothing to the degree of s5. She directly goes to hestia and asks for bell and when she doesn't get what she wants, she charms the entire fucking city and pretty much kidnaps bell. She does everything she can to reassure him that he was always apart of her familia and tells him how his "memories" with the hestia family are just dreams, fake. Gaslighting and trying to manipulate him into willful submission to her, even with a twisted form of mental support to enable him into her delusion.
When the cats finally outta the bag and the city is unbrainwashed her final hail Mary is the war game to try and take bell by force.
I think that if she initially just went with the war game instead of mass brainwash, the hestia familia would have had less support when the war game came around. I'd say the only reason there was so much help was because everyone was disgusted how they were turned into Freyas minions and wanted retribution against her.
As the wargame ends she loses, her familia is disbanded, she loses everything and pretty much is seen a leper.
Her obsession leading things to the next which would keep her lusting against something she was never going to get.
Her lust and obsession over bell driving her instead of reason would be why she loses everything and finds much more solice at the end of s5 as resorting back to Syr the girl instead of the Goddess Freya.
With the redpilling parts I got from it. Reflect on Freya as one of those boss bitches. High in rank, high Standards (and high maintenance) and self esteem.
The guys each in her familia being just that, likely she was infatuated with each of them until the next came along. Ottar taking the top rank (as her captain) until her eye catches a certain little rookie.
You could also see each one of her familia being as much obsessed and simpish to the point where they enable her infatuation. It's only during the war game that hedin first then hogni and Ottarl come around to thinking that what's best for her is for her to face the reality that even she can't manipulate everything. The purest example being every time bell rejects her advances as Freya and Even as the Pure heart Syr.
It's after she is faced with the reality that her obsession couldn't get her everything and she loses pretty much everything and resorts back to the Syr persona that she comes to see the errors of letting her status get to her head, as well as finally opening her eyes to everyone's words at the tavern and actually listening to Ryu and Bell.
It's another case of wahman delusion that probably wasn't the idea of the author but you could see it that way through a redpill/mgtow lense. The only difference is, in fiction accountability is actually held.
You can see through every time she was in the Shadows to when she played her hand, manipulating everything the entire way, even with the guild to get what she wanted. It was debatable how it was gonna go because with Hermes him being a slippery fuck made you debate whether he was gonna be a good God or trouble but each time Freya made you wonder what part exactly she had to play.
I'd also say one of her mistakes was waiting too long to set her plan into motion. Aside from bell getting some training and seeing how every one of his later opponents would be, he was already at a pretty high rank where he would be a threat in the final battle of the wargame (even though he had insane support against Ottarl). Odds are if she had gone with the plan to acquire bell before season 4, and his 4th rank up, she could have probably used the wargame and won it. Taking bell and the object of her obsession.
It's the constant reminder that a woman can have whatever she wants but it will never be enough when there's something else they want,(Chad In the case) even when that something else doesn't want them, keeps feeding that obsession. That need to have what they never will.
You can also say similarly to how women want the world now, but all they will be met with is simps (her familia) and the world/chad not giving her what she really wants (bell).
It could also be seen as a warning about not letting your lust and obsession drive your being and be the Need all to end all.
Still, I plan on rewatching danmachi to now see through hindsight about every bit of manipulation she had done and through each step she went through.
